This excellent 12 year old limited release from Ardbeg was distilled in 1999 and bottled in 2012 in celebration of the distillery's world first space maturation experiment.
Named after the father of modern astronomy, this whisky celebrates the space experiment that is currently ongoing up high and away on the International Space Station, where compounds of Ardbeg's production process are being tested in a micro-gravity atmopshere - opposed to the normal gravity we experience here on earth.
We duly await the results. A vatting of Ardbeg distillations from 1999, the Galileo is made up from whiskies matured in ex-Marsala casks and first and second fill ex-Bourbon casks.
The result is a distinctly fruity malt that doesn't stray from the peatiness and smokiness you would expect from Ardbeg. The Galileo scooped up the award for "World's Best Single Malt" at the 2013 World Whisky Awards.
