Few names in Scotch whisky command the attention of collectors quite like The Macallan. Today, it is one of the world's most recognisable luxury whisky brands, with highly sought-after official releases and some extraordinary prices at auction.
But for collectors interested in the history of the distillery, some of the most fascinating Macallans were not bottled by Macallan at all.
They came from Gordon & MacPhail.
Known as Speymalt from Macallan Distillery, these independent bottlings provide a remarkable record of Macallan whisky across much of the 20th century. From comparatively young expressions to extraordinarily old vintages distilled decades ago, the series has become an important part of Macallan collecting - and a reminder of a time when the distillery's spirit was considerably easier for independent bottlers to acquire.
The Rise of Independent Macallan
To understand the importance of Speymalt, it is necessary to look at Gordon & MacPhail itself.
Founded in Elgin in 1895, Gordon & MacPhail began life as a grocer and wine and spirits merchant. Its location in the heart of Speyside placed the company at the centre of one of Scotland's most important whisky-producing regions. Over subsequent decades, the firm developed close relationships with distilleries throughout the area, purchasing new-make spirit and maturing it in casks under its own control.
This became one of the defining characteristics of Gordon & MacPhail's approach.
Rather than simply buying mature whisky and bottling it, the company could effectively become the custodian of spirit for decades. Its experience in selecting casks and managing maturation allowed it to produce whiskies that were sometimes older, and occasionally considerably more characterful, than anything available from the distillery itself.
The Macallan was founded in 1824, Macallan had already established a strong reputation for the quality of its spirit long before it became the global luxury brand we know today. Gordon & MacPhail developed a longstanding relationship with the distillery and bottled Macallan under a number of different labels during the 20th century.
Before Speymalt: Macallan-Glenlivet
One of the fascinating aspects of the Gordon & MacPhail / Macallan connection is that Speymalt was not the beginning of their story.
During the 1960s and 1970s, Gordon & MacPhail bottled Macallan under labels including Macallan-Glenlivet. Some of these early bottlings were drawn from casks purchased decades earlier and included remarkably old whisky.
Vintage expressions from the 1930s and 1940s could reach 25, 30, 35 or even 40 years of age by the time they were bottled. Some were produced for export markets and Italian importers, making individual examples today extremely scarce.
This period is particularly significant because it illustrates just how different the whisky world was before the modern single malt boom.
Macallan was respected, but it had not yet become the luxury powerhouse it is today. Independent bottlers could acquire its spirit, mature it themselves and present it to consumers under their own labels.
That freedom would gradually disappear as Macallan cemented its own position at the top of the single malt whisky tree.
The Birth of Speymalt
The Speymalt from Macallan Distillery designation eventually became Gordon & MacPhail's dedicated identity for its independent Macallan bottlings.
The name is significant. Rather than simply calling the whisky "Macallan", Gordon & MacPhail used the term Speymalt, clearly identifying the whisky's Speyside origins while distinguishing it from official Macallan releases.
Gordon & MacPhail reserves the Speymalt title specifically for Macallan spirit. The range consists of single malts from the distillery, matured in oak casks selected by Gordon & MacPhail, with the vintage and bottling year displayed on the bottles, and on occasion the cask number, making the series particularly interesting for collectors.
Speymalt Bottlings For Your Radar
The most desirable Speymalts are naturally those from the middle decades of the 20th century.
Bottlings from the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s and 1960s are particularly fascinating because they represent whisky distilled during periods when production methods, cask availability and maturation practices were very different from today.

The Legacy of Speymalt
Today, Macallan is one of the most collected names in Scotch whisky.
But before the elaborate modern releases, global marketing campaigns and record-breaking auction prices, there was a distillery producing superb spirit in Speyside - and independent whisky merchants such as Gordon & MacPhail quietly buying that spirit and laying it down for the future.
The Speymalt series is a product of that earlier whisky world.
For collectors, the oldest bottles are much more than rare Macallan’s. They are surviving examples of the way Scotch whisky was produced, matured and sold during the 20th century.
And that is ultimately what makes Speymalt so important. Every vintage tells a story. Every surviving bottle offers a glimpse of a Macallan that, in some cases, may never be experienced again.
For anyone fascinated by historic Scotch whisky, the Speymalt series deserves a place alongside the great independent bottling collections - not merely as a footnote to Macallan's history, but as a significant chapter in it.
