Happy National Bourbon Day!

Happy National Bourbon Day!

National Bourbon Day is an annual celebration, on the 14th June, of America’s Native Spirit. The date was chosen to honour the day when Reverend Elijah Craig is said to have first produced bourbon in 1789.

Very much like Scotch whisky, having its own classifications in order to be named as Scotch, for a whiskey to branded as bourbon it must; be produced in the US, contain at least 51% corn in its grain mix, be bottled at a minimum 40% ABV (80 Proof) and aged in new charred oak barrels made from American White Oak. ‘Straight bourbon’ must be aged for a minimum of two years, though they are often matured for much longer time periods.

Bourbon obtains its colour from the length of time the liquid spends in the barrel, with the charred wood providing caramelised sugars that add deep flavours and character to the whiskey. Scotch whisky also has a lot to thank the bourbon industry for, with many ex-bourbon barrels being used to mature the water of life!

Whilst most bourbon is distilled Kentucky (95% of the world’s supply), it can be produced anywhere in the US and still be defined as bourbon, as long as it sticks to the fundamental rules outlined above. It is believed that its popularity soared in the 1990s due to the boom in single barrel and small batch releases.

There are so many great bourbons to try, such as A.H. Hirsch, Evan Williams, Maker’s Mark, Elijah Craig, Willett,Woodford Reserve, 1792, Booker’s, Four Roses, Parker’s, Noah’s Mill, Michter’s, Blanton’s and Colonel EH Taylor. Then you have the brands from the legendary BTAC (Buffalo Trace Antique Collection) annual range that includes Stagg, W.L. Weller and Eagle Rare. The cherry on top of this already delicious cake would then include the exclusive and hard to obtain Old Rip Van Winkle range, consisting of Old Rip Van Winkle 10yo, Van Winkle 12yo Special Reserve and the Family Reserve trio of 15yo, 20yo and an extremely rare 23yo. We’ve listed a few of our favourite rarities from this list below: -

A.H. Hirsch 1974 20yo, Red Wax

AH Hirsch 1974 20yo

This spectacular 20 year old straight Bourbon was distilled in Spring 1974 at the Pennco Distillery (Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania). Not long after this stunning liquid was laid to rest the distillery was purchased in foreclosure and renamed as Michter's.

Adolf Hirsch had commissioned the whiskey to be distilled, which then aged until 1989 when the distillery was once again in foreclosure. Hirsch then sold the whiskey to the Hue Family (Kentucky) in 1990. Although most of the stock was transferred into stainless steel tanks, which halted the age at 16 years, some was further matured in barrels and bottled at 18, 19, and 20 years. This 20 year old 'red wax' release was bottled between late 1994 and early 1995.

Filled from new charred American oak barrel at 91.6 Proof (45.8%), this limited release A. H. Hirsch Finest Reserve is a Unicorn of the Bourbon world and is still classed by many as one of the greatest Bourbon whiskies of all time.

The Michter's distillery (originally named Shenk's and later Bomberger's) was built in 1840 in Pennsylvania and may have been, at the time of its closure in 1989, the oldest distillery in the USA - it is now officially listed as a National Historic Landmark.
