For enthusiasts, this means access to a new generation of rare and special American whiskies that are as collectible as they are unforgettable.
Whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur or a curious newcomer, this guide highlights some of the most exceptional and sought-after offerings in today’s American whiskey landscape.
What Makes a Whiskey “Rare”?
American whiskey can be labelled as rare for several reasons: -
- Limited production runs
- Allocation to select regions or retailers
- Age statements that take decades to mature
- Unique finishing techniques or experimental blends
- Cult status and high demand
These factors create bottlings that disappear almost immediately from shelves - and often become modern legends. We’ve compiled a unique and rare selections list of bourbon and rye would be deserving of a spot at any Thanksgivingtable!
A. H. Hirsch 1974 20yo Finest Reserve – Red Wax

This spectacular 20 year old straight Bourbon was distilled in Spring 1974 at the Pennco Distillery (Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania). Not long after this stunning liquid was laid to rest the distillery was purchased in foreclosure and renamed as Michter's.
Adolf Hirsch had commissioned the whiskey to be distilled, which then aged until 1989 when the distillery was once again in foreclosure. Hirsch then sold the whiskey to the Hue Family (Kentucky) in 1990. Although most of the stock was transferred into stainless steel tanks, which halted the age at 16 years, some was further matured in barrels and bottled at 18, 19, and 20 years. This 20 year old 'red wax' release was bottled between late 1994 and early 1995.
Filled from new charred American oak barrel at 91.6 Proof (45.8%), this limited release A. H. Hirsch Finest Reserve is a Unicorn of the Bourbon world and is still classed by many as one of the greatest Bourbon whiskies of all time.
The Michter's distillery (originally named Shenk's and later Bomberger's) was built in 1840 in Pennsylvania and may have been, at the time of its closure in 1989, the oldest distillery in the USA - it is now officially listed as a National Historic Landmark.

Blanton’s Original, Single Barrel Straight Bourbon 1984 Bottling

A landmark in bourbon history, this exceptionally rare bottle of Blanton's Original Single Barrel hails from one of the very first bottling runs in 1984 — the year Blanton’s debuted and forever changed the landscape of American whiskey.
As the first modern single-barrel bourbon, Blanton’s not only pioneered a new standard of quality but also ushered in the “super-premium” bourbon category at a time when the industry was in decline.
This particular barrel — No. 549 — was dumped on the 16th October 1984 and matured in the famed Warehouse H, Rick No. 52. Bottled at 93 Proof (46.5% ABV), it represents the early craftsmanship and vision of Elmer T. Lee, the master distiller who launched Blanton’s as a tribute to tradition and innovation.
Encased in the iconic spherical bottle with its now-legendary horse and jockey stopper, this is more than just a bourbon — it’s a piece of whiskey history. Highly collectible and virtually impossible to find, this bottle is a must-have for serious collectors and connoisseurs alike.

This sensational Sazerac straight Rye whiskey was distilled at Buffalo Trace in Spring 1998 and bottled at 18 years old for their annual Antique Collection in Spring 2016.
Bottled from charred American white oak at the series standard strength 45% ABV, this limited edition Kentucky Rye is one of an estimated 2,687 bottles - considerably down on previous years due to a colossal loss of over 72% to evaporation. Sazerac has a very loyal fanbase and these releases from the BTAC can often be one of the most difficult to track down - quite simpy because it's a brilliantly consistent whiskey.
The famed Sazerac Coffee House was founded in 1850 in New Orleans, although you could consider it more a saloon. It was also the birth of "America's First Cocktail", the Sazerac, which initially blended Brandy, Sugar and Bitters but later swapped out the Brandy for Rye Whiskey.
This 18 year old was released in 2000 for the first time after a 110 year absence, making for a triumphant return.
